In the 1990s, technology was hard. The technical skills required to manage enterprise IT infrastructure resulted in siloed teams of technical specialists for different functions: storage, compute, networking, and applications. Putting anything new into production required lots of manual, advanced technical work, so technologists worked on extended release cycles.
